Bad breath (halitosis) can be an unpleasant and embarrassing condition. Many of us may not realize we have bad breath, but we all do from time to time, especially in the morning.
There are various reasons why one may have bad breath, but in healthy people the main reason is due to microbial deposits on the tongue, especially on the back of the tongue. Some studies have shown that simply brushing your tongue reduces bad breath by up to 70 percent.
Morning Time: Saliva flow almost stops during sleep and its reduced cleansing action allows bacteria to grow, causing bad breath.
Certain foods: Garlic, onion, etc. Foods that contain odor-causing compounds enter the bloodstream; they are transferred to the lungs, where they are exhaled.
Poor oral hygiene habits: Food particles left in the mouth promote bacterial growth.
Periodontal (gum) disease: Colonies of bacteria and food debris found under inflamed gums.
Dental cavities and ill-fitting appliances: They can also contribute to bad breath.
Dry mouth (xerostomia): Can be caused by certain medications, salivary gland problems, or continuous breathing through the mouth.
Smoking: Dries out the mouth and causes bad breath.
Diet: Certain chemicals called ketones are released into the breath as the body burns fat.
Dehydration, hunger and missed meals: Drinking water and chewing food increases saliva flow and kills bacteria.
Certain medical conditions and diseases: Diabetes, liver and kidney problems, chronic sinus infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia are several conditions that can contribute to bad breath.
Keeping track of what you eat can help identify the cause of your bad breath. Also, review your current medications, recent surgeries, or illnesses with your dentist.
It is generally recommended to floss at least once a day, ideally before bedtime. Flossing helps to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and along the gumline, areas that a toothbrush cannot easily reach. This helps to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss and other serious health problems.
There are several reasons why people may want to whiten their teeth, including:
To improve the appearance of their smile and boost self-confidence.
To remove stains caused by tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine, and other foods and beverages.
To remove discoloration that occurs with age.
To brighten teeth that have become dull or yellowed over time.
To prepare for a special event, such as a wedding or job interview.
Teeth whitening can be done at home using over-the-counter products or in a dental office by a dental professional. It's important to note that teeth whitening is not suitable for everyone and may not be effective on all types of stains. A dental professional can assess your individual needs and recommend the best course of treatment.
This type of teeth whitening usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (casts) of your teeth will be made to make custom clear plastic trays.
At your second appointment, you will try the trays for a proper fit and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are used with a special bleaching solution, either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks, depending on the degree of staining and the desired level of whitening. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you whiten your teeth, but it will go away shortly after you have stopped whitening.
You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and will be encouraged to see your dentist regularly to help you maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
